Statement from the Board:

OGHA Board of Directors - 2024-25 Priorities and Progress
This year, the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Girls Hockey Association (OGHA) focused on four key priorities: program stability, financial sustainability, fairness in competitive tryouts, and advancing girls and women in hockey.

1. Program Stability
Our goal has been to support both strong house league and competitive programs. We recognize that these programs can sometimes compete for players, but we remain committed to ensuring accessible opportunities across all levels. Specifically, we aimed to maintain at least two house league teams at each age bracket to allow for a vibrant DS (Development Stream) program for players seeking more hockey. With national registration numbers in decline, we continue to prioritize growth and retention across all age groups and skill levels.

2. Financial Sustainability
Following a small financial loss last year, largely due to underutilized ice time, we implemented a centralized ice scheduler to optimize ice use. This helped reduce costs, improve scheduling efficiency, and contributed to a stronger financial position for the association this year.

3. Fairness in Competitive Tryouts
To further ensure integrity in our competitive program, we implemented an independent tryout coordinator to monitor each age group/level and continued to use independent evaluators during the Spring 2025 tryout process. The coordinator provided standardized assessment criteria and worked with the independent evaluators after each tryout to analyze results bringing further rigor and coordination to the tryout process.

4. Advancing Girls and Women in Hockey
We remain deeply committed to fostering an inclusive, empowering environment for girls and women in sport. This year, we took several meaningful steps, including:
- Designating female-only change rooms to ensure comfort, safety, and respect.
- Actively recruiting, mentoring, and supporting female coaches, and reinforcing their autonomy and leadership within a traditionally male-dominated sport.
- Welcoming players who are new to hockey at later ages and ensuring they have a clear, supported pathway to develop skills and thrive within the OGHA community.

Together, these initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to building a strong, inclusive, and resilient hockey community—where every girl has the opportunity to play, grow, and lead.
