Development Stream is a value-packed and popular option, delivering more ice time, development opportunities, and competition within a fun, growth-oriented environment. If your daughter is ready to advance her skills and stay committed to her house league, show her interest to the coach as soon as possible—spots are limited and highly sought after!
What is Development Stream (DS)?
Development Stream (DS) is an optional, tryout-based program within the house league, giving players the opportunity to experience more competitive hockey while still participating in regular house league activities. It serves as a bridge to competitive hockey for those ready to develop their skills further, without needing the full commitment of rep programs.
Eligibility & Selection
To form a DS team, there must be at least two house league teams in the division, typically in U11, U13, U15, and U18. Tryouts are usually held in early to mid-November, with a small registration fee (around $20-$25). Teams generally include 15 skaters, 2 goalies, and may roster up to 25 players, with only 17 dressing per game. House league coaches often lead the selection due to their familiarity with the players.
Season Structure & Schedule
The DS season typically runs from December through March, overlapping with house league schedules. DS teams play about eight exhibition games and participate in up to three DS tournaments, such as provincial or showcase events. Weekly on-ice commitments include roughly one DS practice or game in addition to house league, occasionally resulting in double-headers.
Commitment & Costs
Players remain fully committed to their house league teams, which take priority over all DS activities. Costs vary by association but typically include a $20-$25 tryout fee and $250-$550 in team fees to cover ice, jerseys, referees, and tournament entries. Families are also responsible for any travel, accommodation, or food expenses during tournaments.
Benefits of DS

- Competitive exhibition games and tournaments that challenge and accelerate player development
- Personalized coaching focused on skill, effort, attitude, and teamwork
